Embark on an unforgettable 10-hour journey through Serbia’s most spectacular medieval fortresses along the legendary Danube River. This comprehensive full-day tour combines centuries of history, breathtaking architecture, and authentic local flavors, taking you to three of the region’s most significant strongholds: Ram, Golubac, and Smederevo Fortress.
Your adventure begins with a comfortable 2-hour drive from Belgrade through Eastern Serbia’s stunning landscapes, where our professional English-speaking guides share captivating stories about this historically rich region. Each fortress tells a unique story of medieval power, strategic importance, and architectural brilliance that shaped the Balkans for centuries.
Ram Fortress, built in 1483 by Sultan Bayezid II, stands as one of the most picturesque and powerful medieval fortresses on the Danube. With five imposing towers connected by mighty ramparts and 36 cannon openings, it surpasses even Belgrade’s famous Kalemegdan Fortress in military sophistication. National Geographic recognized its romantic sunsets as among Europe’s most beautiful, making it a photographer’s paradise.
Golubac Fortress represents the perfect fairy-tale castle experience, dramatically positioned at the head of Đerdap Gorge. Its nine towers, each standing 20-25 meters high, create an unforgettable silhouette against the rugged Danube landscape. This defensive complex served multiple kingdoms throughout centuries and remains one of the most beautiful castles along the entire 2,850-kilometer Danube route from source to the Black Sea.
Your cultural immersion continues with an exclusive wine and brandy tasting at the renowned Pruna distillery and winery. Located in one of Serbia’s most picturesque regions, this family-owned establishment has been perfecting their craft for generations. Sample premium Chardonnay or Cabernet Sauvignon wines alongside artisanal single-barrel brandies made from plum, apple, cherry, grappa, or quince, accompanied by traditional Serbian pone bread and local cheese.
The tour concludes at Smederevo Fortress, a 15th-century marvel covering 11 hectares with its distinctive triangular shape. This water-type fortification consists of the Small Town (ruler’s residence) and the Big Town, featuring the magnificent “Magna Audientia” Hall with Gothic and Romanesque architectural elements. The fortress’s strategic position between the Danube and Jezava rivers showcases medieval engineering at its finest.

Ram Fortress, often described as the most picturesque and powerful medieval fortress on the Danube. It was built in 1483 by order of Sultan Bayezid II - grandfather of Suleiman the Magnificent. According to the legend from this period, Sultan Bayezid II, visiting his soldiers, stopped to rest on a hill from which there was a beautiful view of the Danube and the opposite, Hungarian side. Ram Fortress has five towers connected by mighty ramparts, with 36 cannon openings, which speaks of its great power. For the sake of comparison, Kalemegdan Fortress in Belgrade has only 22 slots. They are arranged on the walls of towers and ramparts to cover the entire circle around the fortress. No less impressive than the history and military power of this fortress are the romantic sunsets, which "National Geography" declared to be one of the most beautiful in Europe.
We will proceed our adventure towards Golubac Fortress, a defensive complex used to defend many kingdoms through centuries. Golubac is the perfect fairy-tale castle, wonderfully set off by its location in the rugged landscape at the head of Đerdap Gorge. There are nine towers in all, each between 20 and 25m high, and combined with the fortress's exciting position leaning over the Danube. They make Golubac undoubtedly one of the most beautiful castles along the 2,850km Danube odyssey from source to the Black Sea.
Short break, snack (local pone and cheese), and wine or brandy tasting (Chardonnay or Cabernet Sauvignon and some single barrel brandy: plum, apple, cherry, grappa, or quince). The distillery & winery "Pruna" located in one of Serbia's most picturesque regions. For the magic that lies in their bottles, they can thank the mighty blue Danube, which flows near the Djerdap gorge and carries with it a secret that gives this climate perfect agricultural characteristics. The village of Vuković and the entire Braničevo region are known since ancient times for their quality brandy and wine made there with local villagers' skill and knowledge, generations back.
Smederevo Fortress, built in the 15th century covers approximately 11 hectares, has the shape of an irregular triangle, and consists of two parts - the Big and the Small Town. First, Small Town was built, where the ruler's residence, a building for family, escort, guard, and a library and a mint were located. The construction of the Small Town lasted only two years! The most representative part of the Small Town was the Great Reception Hall - the " Magna Audientia" Hall, decorated with three Gothic and one Romanesque "biforas" - double windows carved in stone. After the Small Town construction, the Big Town of the Smederevo Fortress was built around 1439. At that time, another 19 towers with ramparts were added, and a trench was dug on the land side, connecting rivers Danube and Jezava. In that way, the fortress was surrounded by water and classified as a water type of fortification.
After visiting 3rd stronghold in this tour, we continue our ride back to Belgrade, with a planned arrival time in the late afternoon hours.

“Our private tour company contracted Victor Tours for 2 different day tours in Serbia. We did the 3 fortresses and Winery tour and the cave and monasteries tour. We were so lucky to have Jovan as our guide! Both trips were incredible, and I’d recommend both. Jovan was an excellent driver and recommended amazing local restaurants for lunch.
