About This Tour

Step back into the world of Communist Yugoslavia on this 4-hour walking tour through the heart of Belgrade. With an expert English-speaking guide, you’ll explore how life in the city unfolded after World War II — from the rise of Josip Broz Tito and the Yugoslav federation to the urban legends and everyday realities of life under socialism.

The tour takes you through Belgrade’s most historically rich streets, ending with a visit to the Yugoslav History Museum — one of the most compelling collections of 20th-century history in the Balkans. Along the way, you’ll hop aboard a classic trolley for a one-way ride, connecting history with the city’s living fabric.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a first-time visitor, or simply curious about a world that no longer exists, this tour brings the Communist era to life in a way no textbook can.

Detailed Itinerary

1

This walking tour portrays the most contradictory era of Serbia covering the period from World War II to 2000-s. Our story can be started with a „once upon a time", nodding to the fairytalelike mentality of the generations born and raised during this period and the nostalgia for the golden years led by the towering figure of Josip Broz Tito. Conspiracy theories and urban legends from the 2nd half of the 20th century will take you through the rise and reign of Communism in Yugoslavia. You will meet our guide, your comrade at the place where the Communist Yugoslavia had been conceived. Republic Square is the place where Tito's inspiring speech as an overture for the proclamation of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia happened. All along the route of the tour, you'll see socialistic grey edifices belonging to the constructivism era mixed with numerous monuments from the era of the Yugoslavian Kingdom and the last couple of decades.

2

Terazije Square will tell you stories about glamorous holidays and festivities, and you will learn about world-known celebrities and untypical guests in Hotel Moskva. The former square of Marx and Engels with the high-and-mighty Trade Union Hall will tell you how the cult of work was the ideal of Yugoslavian society and how one miner became a superstar.

3

At the Pioneer's Park, the ritual of the pioneer oath will be the theme, as well as how the socialist regime was the most liberal of all countries within this system.Allowing the influence of the West in music, a change of lifestyle was created. Each good story needs to have dark parts, so in this one, we will share it with you without censure. On your way, you will see the monument of Ivo Andrić, a Nobel Prized Serbian writer and a Serbian ambassador in Berlin at the beginning of World War II. Afterward, as we would like to provide you with the full experience of the 50-year-long historical period of former Yugoslavia, you will catch a trolley, a symbol of public transportation back then, which is still active. It will bring you to the elite district of Belgrade called Dedinje, famous for numerous embassies and residential villas, but also the complex of the Museum of Yugoslavia.

4

It is devoted to the life and deeds of Josip Broz Tito, the famous communist leader revered as an outstanding man who led the country to a bright future. In the museum, you will see a stunning collection of ceremonial presents given to the Yugoslavian President, one of the most valued being a gift from the crew of Apollo 11.At the end of the tour, you will be introduced to the mausoleum known as the House of Flowers where leader Tito is buried. Thanks, both to the great collection and storytelling, here we will revive the last days of the Former Republic of Yugoslavia.Hopefully, we will bring you back safely to reality from the time when life was tailored by the size of the ordinary man.

Excellent. Completely recommend to understand Serbia past and present

“Fantastic, interesting and informative tour. I learnt a lot about the history of this interesting country. My guide Marko was amazing. Due to protests in the city, I was the only person on the tour but the company didn’t want to let me down so ran it with just me which meant I got to ask as many questions as I wanted. Made my trip to Belgrade.”

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Where does the tour start and end?

  • Start: Trg republike 9 (Republic Square), right next to the Prince Mihailo monument — the bronze equestrian statue. It’s easy to spot.
  • End: The Yugoslav History Museum (also known as the House of Flowers), where Tito is buried.
  • The tour departs at 10:00 AM, so plan to arrive a few minutes early.

2. Is this tour available as a private experience?

Yes — you can choose between a group tour (great for solo travelers or those on a budget) or a private tour (ideal for families, couples, or anyone who wants a more personalized experience). Private tours allow you to set the pace and ask more in-depth questions.

3. What will I actually see and learn on this tour?

This Belgrade communist history tour covers:

  • The political rise of Josip Broz Tito and the formation of Socialist Yugoslavia
  • Post-WWII life in Belgrade — daily routines, propaganda, and political culture
  • Urban legends and lesser-known stories from the communist era
  • A one-way trolley ride through historic Belgrade streets
  • The Yugoslav History Museum, which houses Tito’s personal memorabilia, gifts from world leaders, and exhibits on Yugoslav life

It’s both educational and surprisingly moving — especially for anyone with Balkan roots or a love of Cold War history.

4. Is the Yugoslav History Museum entry fee included?

Yes. Museum admission is fully covered — no need to purchase tickets separately. The guide will accompany you through the exhibits and provide context that makes the collection far more meaningful than a self-guided visit.

5. How physically demanding is this tour?

The Belgrade communist walking tour is moderately easy. Most of the route follows flat city streets, and the trolley ride gives your legs a rest mid-tour. That said, comfortable walking shoes are recommended, especially if the weather is warm. The full experience runs approximately 4 hours.

6. Is this tour suitable for people who don't know much about Yugoslav history?

Absolutely. The guide tailors the storytelling for all levels — whether you’re well-versed in Balkan history or just heard the name “Tito” for the first time. The mix of political history, personal stories, and urban legends keeps it engaging without being overwhelming. Many travelers say it’s one of the best things to do in Belgrade, even if history wasn’t on their original itinerary.
