Types of Belgrade Tours

Old Town Walking Tours

A Belgrade walking tour is the easiest way to start. Most routes begin at Republic Square, go down Knez Mihailova Street and end at Kalemegdan Fortress, where the Sava meets the Danube. Many also pass through Skadarlija, the old cobbled street full of kafanas and live music. Expect 2 to 3 hours on foot.

Food and Drink Tours

Serbian food is heavy, meaty and cheap, and a guide helps you order the right things. Belgrade food tours usually include burek for breakfast, ćevapi or pljeskavica, kajmak, ajvar and a glass of rakija. Some focus on markets like Zeleni Venac. Others stick to traditional kafanas. For a full list, see the street food tours in Serbia.

River Cruises

Belgrade sits on two rivers, and the view from the water is different from anything on land. Belgrade river cruises run past the fortress, Great War Island and the Zemun waterfront. Sunset cruises are the most popular. Most last 1.5 to 2 hours.

History and Communist Tours

The 20th century left a lot behind in Belgrade. Yugoslav history tours usually visit the House of Flowers, where Tito is buried, and explain the breakup of Yugoslavia and the 1999 NATO bombing. Some go underground into old Roman and Austrian tunnels and bunkers below the city. If history is your thing, the cultural tours go deeper into traditions, churches and local life.

Zemun Tours

Zemun used to be a separate town on the Austro-Hungarian side of the border. It still feels like one. Tours here cover the Gardoš Tower, the narrow streets of the old center and the fish restaurants along the Danube.

Nightlife Tours

Belgrade’s nightlife has a reputation, and it’s earned. Pub crawls and night tours take you to bars in Dorćol and Cetinjska Street, and in summer to the splavovi, the floating river clubs. Browse the nightlife tours if you want someone to handle the route and the door policy.

Top Sights Covered on Belgrade City Tours

Most Belgrade city tours include some mix of these:

  • Kalemegdan Fortress – parks, walls, the Victor monument and the best view in the city
  • Temple of Saint Sava – one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world, with a gold mosaic crypt
  • Skadarlija – the 19th-century bohemian quarter
  • Knez Mihailova Street – the main pedestrian street
  • House of Flowers – Tito’s mausoleum, part of the Museum of Yugoslavia
  • Zemun and Gardoš Tower – old town feel and river views
  • Avala Tower – a TV tower on a hill just south of the city

Short tours stick to the center. Longer or private tours add Avala, Zemun or the House of Flowers, which are spread out and easier with a car.

How to Choose the Right Tour

Group or Private

Group tours are cheaper and good for a first look at the city. Private tours cost more but let you set the pace, skip what doesn’t interest you and add places outside the center. Families and people with limited time usually get more out of a private tour.

Length

A 2 to 3 hour walk works well on your first day. It helps you get your bearings. After that, pick something more specific, like food, history or a cruise.

What’s Included

Check the details before you book. Things that vary a lot between tours:

  • Entry tickets (museums, the fortress clock tower, underground sites)
  • Food and drinks on food tours
  • Hotel pickup
  • Group size
  • Free cancellation window

Best Time for Belgrade Tours

Spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) are the most comfortable months. Summer gets hot, often above 35°C, so morning walks and evening cruises work best then. Winter is cold and grey, but the city is quieter, and Orthodox Christmas on January 7 is worth seeing. Food and history tours run year-round. Most river cruises run only in the warmer months.

Practical Tips

  • Wear good shoes. Kalemegdan and Skadarlija mean hills and cobblestones.
  • Carry some cash in Serbian dinars (RSD) for markets, small bakeries and tips. Cards work in most other places.
  • Book food and night tours on an empty stomach and with no early plans the next day.
  • Check the meeting point the day before. Republic Square is the most common one.
  • Staying central makes everything easier. This guide on where to stay in Belgrade covers the best areas.

Day Trips From Belgrade

Belgrade is also a good base for exploring Serbia. Popular trips include Novi Sad and the Fruška Gora monasteries, Golubac Fortress and the Iron Gates gorge, and Smederevo Fortress on the Danube. Most take a full day with transport included. See all day trips from Belgrade.
